The Project
The proposed off-shore Oceanic Wind project is located in coast Tsimshian territory on the northwest coast of British Columbia, Canada, in Hecate Strait near Stephens Island, approximately 30 km west of Prince Rupert.
The project location offers one of the world’s strongest and most consistent wind resources which, when harnessed, would provide clean renewable energy to generations of British Columbians.
The remarkable offshore wind resource in Hecate Strait can support BC’s commitment to develop clean, renewable, made-in-BC electricity and can significantly contribute to meeting the growing energy needs in the northwest part of the province. With an impressive gross capacity factor of over 60% and wind data showing an average speed of 10 meters per second, the Project would be a utility-size asset that could produce power reliably 97% of the time.
The Oceanic Wind project will be built in partnership with First Nations and with an established, world-class offshore wind developer to ensure that the project is sustainable and economic.
The Hecate Strait Project is well suited to meet the growing electricity needs of the Province, help in production of Green Hydrogen, help reduce the Province’s dependency on Fossil Fuels and meet the Province’s CleanBC Climate Changes objectives for 2030 and beyond.
High Profile Project that Meets Major Provincial and Federal Government Policy Initiatives
- Renewable energy project, only prominent utility scale offshore wind project in NW BC
- First Nations partnership opportunities for the wind project and the transmission line
- Meets objectives of CleanBC policy framework
- Consistent with Federal Climate Change/Infrastructure/First Nations/Infrabank policy objectives
Site
The project is located on the east side of Hecate Strait, west of Stephens Island. The wind energy field at this location harbours some of the strongest, most-consistent winds in the world.
Benefits
The proposed Oceanic Wind project is a utility-scale project that will help power the regional economy and growing local community, as well as facilitate job and economic growth.
Outlook
British Columbia Electricity Supply Deficit is growing rapidly. Renewable energy, and BC’s aggressive “Climate” implementation plan, are essential to meet climate policies and CleanBC Targets.
Timeline
The Government of BC has acknowledged the urgent need of new energy generation projects to meet growing demand and to accelerate efforts to build a clean economy.
