Project Timeline

The Government of BC has acknowledged that the province is in urgent need of new energy generation projects to meet the growing demand for power and to accelerate efforts to build a clean economy.

To that end, the Province announced in December 2024 that all future wind projects would be exempt in BC from comprehensive environmental assessment processes. This decision – combined with the existing data on the wind resource in Hecate Strait and associated impacts that has already been compiled by Oceanic Wind – will significantly reduce the regulatory review timeline for the proposed off-shore wind project. Oceanic Wind will work closely with Coast Tsimshian Enterprises and an established offshore wind developer to ensure that project development processes are transparent and incorporate Indigenous, community, and stakeholder input.

The construction period for offshore wind projects have also substantially reduced in recent years due to advances in engineering and technology, which also results in lower construction costs.
